What to do based on how much time you have
How much time do you have? Here are three ideas to make the most of Puerto del Rosario: a few hours on a stopover, a full day, or a long weekend. Walking and driving times are measured with Google Maps. Museum opening hours may change—check before you go.
A few hours from the pier
The cruise terminal is on Avenida Reyes de España, on the seafront promenade and next to the Tourist Office on Avenida Marítima. This route is done entirely on foot: just over 3 km and about 3 hours including stops.
- Avenida Marítima, 3 minutes from the pier. It’s the seafront promenade, and it’s where the works of the Sculpture Park start to appear.
- Municipal Market, 6 minutes from the pier.
- Calle Primero de Mayo, 4 minutes away. It’s the pedestrian street with shops and cafés, next to the Cabildo.
- Miguel de Unamuno House Museum, 1 minute away. It’s the former hotel where the writer lived during his exile in 1924. Next door is the Church of Our Lady of the Rosary. Check the opening hours on its listing before you go.
- Juan Ismael Art Centre, 12 minutes away. Check the opening hours on its listing.
- Lime Kilns and El Charco, 4 minutes away. The main Tourist Office is there, next to the El Charco terrace area.
- Back to the pier along the coast: 20 minutes.
If your stopover is on a Saturday, the Biosphere Farmers’ Market is open in the morning with cheese, gofio, honey, and fruit from the island. Museum opening hours change depending on the day—check their listings or at the Tourist Office. If you’d rather not walk as much, try the tourist train.
One day
In the morning, the walking route around the city. In the afternoon, a drive inland around the municipality: about 60 km and one hour of driving in total, with windmills, chapels, and villages.
- Molina de La Asomada, 10 minutes from the centre. It’s the only windmill on the island that still makes gofio using the wind. Check the opening hours on its listing.
- Tetir, 7 minutes away, with the Church of Santo Domingo de Guzmán.
- Tefía, 13 minutes away, with the La Alcogida Ecomuseum, restored traditional houses, and the Molino de Tefía. Check the Ecomuseum opening hours on its listing.
- La Ampuyenta, 9 minutes away, with the Doctor Mena House Museum, the Hospitalito, and the Hermitage of San Pedro de Alcántara. Check the opening hours on their listings.
- Back to Puerto del Rosario: 17 minutes.
Before you set off, check which days each museum is open: if one is closed on the day you planned, switch the order of the days.
Two or three days
- Day 1: the city on foot, with time for the terraces at El Charco and a swim at Playa Blanca, a 3-minute drive from the centre.
- Day 2: the inland drive, as in the one-day plan, with more time at each stop.
- Day 3: the west coast. Los Molinos beach is 30 minutes from the centre and 10 minutes from Tefía. Go for a walk and to see the sea: the swell is often strong and swimming is dangerous. The Los Molinos ravine is closed from February 15 to July 31 to protect nesting birds.
