Tefía Astronomical Observatory
The Fuerteventura Astronomical Observatory is located in the center of the island, in the surroundings of Tefía, and is the main reference point for the observation of the night sky in Fuerteventura. Its location, far from urban centers and with little light pollution, makes it a privileged enclave for stargazing.
The Astronomical Observatory lodge is located in the area, where it is possible to stay overnight with prior reservation. In its facilities there is an observation dome equipped with a telescope managed by the Agrupación Astronómica de Fuerteventura, a group that develops an important informative work and organizes astronomical observation meetings, at least one Friday night a month, open to both amateurs and people interested in starting in astronomy.
The astronomical viewpoint of Tefía offers one of the most impressive celestial panoramic views of the island. Looking south, especially during the first months of the year, two of the brightest stars in the firmament can be observed. They are Sirius, the most luminous star in the constellation Can Major, and Canopus, located in the constellation La Quilla, considered the second brightest star in the celestial sphere.
Above these luminaries stands out the so-called cathedral of the northern hemisphere’s winter sky, the constellation Orion, easily recognizable by its characteristic shield shape. The observation of this stellar array turns the visit to the observatory into a unique experience that connects the visitor with the night sky and reinforces the value of Fuerteventura as a destination for astronomical tourism.
