A rural village with aeronautical history in the interior of Puerto del Rosario
Los Estancos is a small rural village located in the interior of the municipality of Puerto del Rosario, about 5-6 kilometers from the island’s capital. Integrated in the well-known Llanuras del Viso, this village preserves a quiet and agricultural environment, representing an essential part of the interior landscape of Majorero.
Location and surroundings
The hamlet sits on a wide plateau of gentle relief, surrounded by agricultural land and open spaces traditionally dedicated to cereal cultivation and goat farming. Its strategic location places it very close to the town of Puerto del Rosario, the current Fuerteventura airport and the Technology Park, which has generated a balanced coexistence between the rural world and the new uses linked to island development.
Despite this proximity to key infrastructures, Los Estancos maintains a leisurely pace of life, typical of the villages of the interior of the island.
Rural character and local life
Los Estancos is defined by a dispersed urbanism, with single-family homes, farms and agricultural plots. The village retains the identity of the rural villages of Fuerteventura, where community life, the rootedness to the territory and the closeness between neighbors are still fundamental features.
The village hermitage acts as a spatial and social reference, and part of the neighborhood life is articulated around it. The neighborhood association “Las Tahonillas” promotes cultural and festive activities throughout the year, especially on special dates such as Christmas, reinforcing the feeling of community.
Los Estancos and the old airport of Fuerteventura
One of the most unique aspects of Los Estancos is its close relationship with the aeronautical history of the island. In this enclave was located the old airport of Los Estancos, which served as Fuerteventura’s main airport from the early 50’s until 1969.
After the closure of the Tefía aerodrome in 1952, the air activity was transferred to Los Estancos, whose name came to identify the island’s airport for almost two decades. The growth of air traffic and the technical limitations of the site finally led to the construction of the current airport in El Matorral, inaugurated in 1969.
Today, part of the old airport facilities are still standing and the grounds of the former airfield are integrated into new public and technological uses, making Los Estancos a space where past and present coexist.
