El Pescador de Viejas

Juan Miguel Cubas

It is a work by Juan Miguel Cubas in Betancuria granite, year 2003. We find the figure on the seafront promenade of Puerto del Rosario, proclaiming another of the activities that the majoreros have always carried out: here we see him dressed with his hat and barefoot, carrying on his back the traditional palm backpack for transporting catches, fishing gear and bait.

More information

The work is a tribute to fishermen. Next to it one can read: “Dressed in a hat and barefoot, he carries on his back the palm backpack that is still used to carry the catch and fishing gear. The vieja, a fish of the sea bream group, very common in the islands, fresh or salted and dried, was an important supplement to the family diet and a contribution to the small economy, since it was sold both ways. A fish that continues to delight in the kitchen.”

The map loads data from OpenStreetMap, an external service. All the information is also in the list.
