Church of Our Lady of the Rosary
History and Origins
The Church of Nuestra Señora del Rosario, located in the heart of Puerto del Rosario (Fuerteventura Island), is one of the most emblematic monuments of the island’s capital. Its documented origin dates back to 1812, when a first oratory was built next to the pier, after the request of the neighbors and with the license of the bishopric.
Subsequently, between 1824 and 1835 the current building was built, which would not be finally completed until 1930.
In 1888 the bell tower was incorporated, which would house two bells from Marseille (France).)
Architecture and Highlights
- The temple has a neoclassical style with a rectangular floor plan with a single nave, gabled roof, and a presbytery higher than the central nave.
- Its main facade integrates the tower-belfry of three bodies with semicircular arches in the lower body. The windows of the second section and the belfry complete the visually balanced ensemble.
- Inside, the main altarpiece houses the image of the Virgin of the Rosary, patron saint of the city, as well as several works of sacred art that document local devotion.
