Horseshoe Ravine
La Herradura Gully: A Geological Treasure in Fuerteventura
Barranco de la Herradura, located in the municipality of Puerto del Rosario, is a geological formation that offers visitors a unique combination of rugged landscapes and biodiversity. This ravine extends from the vicinity of El Time until it ends near Puerto Lajas, crossing terrain that reveals the rich volcanic history of the island.
Main Features
- Geological Formations: In the upper part of the ravine, one can observe steep and subvertical walls that form small gorges or canyons of fluvial origin, known locally as “hoces”. These structures allow us to appreciate the different layers of pyroclastic materials deposited during the ancient volcanic eruptions of Fuerteventura.
- Biodiversity: The ravine is home to a varied flora, including species such as tabaibas, Moorish tobacco, altabacas and tartagueros. The presence of the marine rosemary(Campylanthus salsoloides), a plant endemic to the region, stands out. As for the fauna, it is home to birds such as the Canary stonechat, the shrike and the turtledove. In addition, the escarpments of the ravine are home to a pair of tagarote falcons, a fascinating species that is difficult to see on the island.
Hiking Routes
Barranco de la Herradura is ideal for hikers looking to explore natural and challenging landscapes. One of the most outstanding routes is the one that crosses the Garganta del Diablo (Devil’s Throat), a stretch that requires climbing skills due to its steep slopes and slippery surfaces. Caution is recommended and, preferably, to be accompanied by an experienced guide.
Recommendations for Visitors
- Physical Preparation: Some sections of the canyon, especially the Garganta del Diablo, present challenges that require good physical condition and experience in steep terrain.
- Equipment: It is essential to bring appropriate footwear, sufficient water, sun protection and, in the case of more technical routes, basic climbing equipment.
- Safety: Due to the complexity of certain sections, it is advisable not to do the route alone and always inform third parties about the planned itinerary.
Exploring the Barranco de la Herradura offers a unique opportunity to immerse yourself in the geological and natural wealth of Fuerteventura, discovering landscapes that tell millions of years of volcanic history and ecological evolution.
