Hermitage of Our Lady of Succor: A Spiritual Refuge in La Matilla

The Hermitage of Nuestra Señora del Socorro is located in the picturesque village of La Matilla, belonging to the municipality of Puerto del Rosario, Fuerteventura. This temple, with more than two centuries of history, is a testimony to the religious fervor and community dedication of its inhabitants.

History and Construction

The construction of the chapel began in the eighteenth century, driven by the initiative of the neighbors who wanted to have their own place of worship in La Matilla. Initially, the building consisted of a nave without sacristy or bell tower. Between 1782 and 1792, a sacristy was added on the south side. In 1805, an extension was undertaken at the head of the church, although it was not completed; even today the remains of the wall that would have been the projected main chapel can still be seen.

Architectural Features

The hermitage has a rectangular floor plan with a three-sided tile roof. The main façade, oriented to the west, has a semicircular arched access door. In the upper central part of the façade there is a belfry with a single hole for the bell, topped by a small wooden cross. The inscription “1902” can be seen on the stonework of the belfry, indicating the date of one of the last significant alterations made to the building.

Equity and Recognition

The hermitage houses the image of Nuestra Señora del Socorro, which presides over the main altar. This temple was declared an Asset of Cultural Interest with the category of Historic-Artistic Monument of interest to the Canary Islands Autonomous Community, according to the Order of July 2, 1993.

Festivities and Traditions

Every year, the inhabitants of La Matilla celebrate festivities in honor of Nuestra Señora del Socorro, which include religious acts, processions and cultural events, thus strengthening community ties and keeping local traditions alive.

The Ermita de Nuestra Señora del Socorro is not only a place of worship, but also a symbol of the identity and history of La Matilla, reflecting the devotion and collective effort of its inhabitants over the centuries.
