Agro-Hotel Rugama
The Rugama House is located at the entrance of the village of Casillas del Angel, in the municipality of Puerto del Rosario, and is one of the most outstanding examples of rural stately architecture of the interior of Fuerteventura. The house belonged to one of the most influential aristocratic families in the area, the Rugama, whose social and political weight was reflected in figures such as Lazaro Rugama Nieves, first mayor of the independent municipality of Tetir in 1834, or Francisco Rugama, known for his confrontation with Dr. Mena, illustrious doctor of Fuerteventura settled in Ampuyenta.
The structure of the house responds to the model of the rural hacienda of the XVIII century, adapted to an eminently agrarian and cereal society, very conditioned by the scarcity of water. The set conserves pajeros, threshing floors, gavias and cistern, as well as a complete system of rainwater harvesting by means of coladeras, nateros and deposits, reflection of the traditional majorero ingenuity to maximize the natural resources.
The building is organized around an enclosed courtyard on the south, while the most noble wings of the building, located to the north and east, have two floors and tile roofs with two and four slopes, connected to each other by a covered corridor. Very close to the main house there are two old haylofts, now restored as dwellings, and another annex building that houses the kitchen and the restaurant.
In October 2017, the Casa de los Rugama reopened its doors converted into an agro-hotel, joining the offer of rural and gastronomic tourism in Fuerteventura. The complex is integrated into an estate of 59,980 square meters and has thirteen rooms, five of them suites, all individually decorated and named with toponyms of the island, with the aim of recreating the stately past of the original house.
The establishment also offers the possibility of acquiring organic products grown on the farm itself, reinforcing its link with the territory and local production. Its restaurant is committed to traditional Majorero cuisine, with dishes such as stew, cheese, black pork or fish, reinterpreted with light touches of fusion. The gastronomic experience is completed with wines and oils with Majorero seal and bread made in the artisan oven of the farm.
As a unique element, the Casa de los Rugama has been used on several occasions as a filming location for television programs and reality shows, in addition to hosting various social events, which has contributed to making this enclave known beyond the local area.
Located in a quiet environment and about 10 kilometers from Puerto del Rosario, Casa de los Rugama has established itself as a place of reference for those seeking an authentic experience in the interior of Fuerteventura, combining historical heritage, rural tourism, gastronomy and landscape.
