La Matilla is a small and cozy rural village located in the interior of the municipality of Puerto del Rosario, in the heart of Fuerteventura. With its tranquil setting and traditional architecture, La Matilla represents the essence of life in the Majorero countryside, offering visitors the opportunity to experience the authentic culture of the island.

History and Heritage

La Matilla has its roots in agriculture and livestock farming, the basis of the local economy for centuries. Its whitewashed stone houses and tile roofs reflect the traditional architecture of Fuerteventura, adapted to the arid conditions of the island.

One of the most emblematic points of the town is the Hermitage of Nuestra Señora de la Merced, a small temple of great historical and religious value for the neighbors. The hermitage is the center of the local festivities, where events are held in honor of the patron saint with strong community participation.

Nature and Landscape

Surrounded by plains and gentle hills, the environment of La Matilla is ideal for those seeking tranquility and contact with nature. Its arid landscapes, dominated by tabaibas, tuneras and cardones, offer hiking trails that allow visitors to enjoy panoramic views and discover the native flora of the area.

Festivals and Traditions

The festivities in honor of Our Lady of Mercy, patron saint of the town, are celebrated every year with a pilgrimage, religious events and popular activities that reflect the hospitality and joy of the neighbors. During these festivities, visitors can enjoy typical gastronomy, Canarian music and traditions that have endured for generations.

Local Gastronomy

In La Matilla, visitors can taste typical products of the island such as majorero cheese, gofio, papas arrugadas con mojo (wrinkled potatoes with mojo sauce) and traditional dishes made with local ingredients. Markets and fairs in the area offer the possibility of knowing and acquiring these products directly from the producers.
