Church of Santa Ana: Architectural Jewel of Casillas del Ángel

The Church of Santa Ana, located in the picturesque village of Casillas del Angel, municipality of Puerto del Rosario, is one of the most emblematic religious buildings of Fuerteventura. Its construction dates back to the 18th century, reflecting the economic prosperity and population growth of the island during that period.

History and Construction

The construction of the church began in 1744, thanks to the joint effort of the local residents. The works lasted until 1781, when the main structure was completed. Later, in 1790, the hermitage was elevated to the category of parish, segregated from the jurisdiction of Betancuria.

Architectural Features

  • Facade: It stands out for its black ashlar masonry cladding, with a door topped by a semicircular arch, which contrasts harmoniously with the whitewashed walls of the rest of the building.
  • Structure: The church has a long nave covered with a gabled roof with exposed tile, while the presbytery has a hipped roof. Inside, there is a remarkable sculptural group of “Saint Anne and the Virgin”, of great artistic value.

Cultural Heritage

The Church of Santa Ana was declared an Asset of Cultural Interest with monument category on June 21, 1991, recognizing its historical and architectural importance in the heritage of Fuerteventura.
