Guisguey: Tradition and Nature in the Heart of Fuerteventura

Guisguey is a small and charming rural village located about 14 kilometers from Puerto del Rosario, in the interior of Fuerteventura. This quiet village stands out for its deep-rooted agricultural and livestock tradition, reflected in its landscapes dotted with houses of traditional Majorero architecture, farmland and dry stone structures that have endured over time.

History and Heritage

Guisguey has its origins in the colonization of the island during the past centuries, when the first settlers settled in this area in search of fertile land. Despite its small size, the village has a rich history, represented by the Ermita de San Pedro, a modest church that has become the heart of the local community. In front of the hermitage is the sculpture “Camino al Sostiadero”, a tribute to rural life and shepherding, one of the most important economic activities in the area.

Landscapes and Nature

The natural environment of Guisguey is one of its main attractions. Surrounded by hills and ravines, it offers numerous hiking trails ideal for those seeking to enjoy the tranquility and beauty of Fuerteventura from a more authentic approach. The Barranco de Guisguey, with its unique geology and native flora, invites visitors to explore its paths and discover the local biodiversity.

Festivals and Traditions

The festivities in Guisguey revolve around the celebration of its patron saint, San Pedro, every June. During these festivities, the village comes to life with religious events, street parties and gastronomic gatherings where you can taste typical dishes such as majorero cheese, puchero canario and papas arrugadas con mojo (wrinkled potatoes with mojo).

Tourist Attractions

  • Ermita de San Pedro, a simple place of worship but of great symbolic value for the inhabitants of the village.
  • Sculpture of the Camino al Sostiadero, a tribute to the cattle tradition of the municipality.
  • Model of the village, a miniature representation of rural life in times gone by.
  • Hiking in the surroundings, with routes that allow you to discover the natural essence of the island.
