Skeleton of Tropical Minke Whale
The Skeleton of the Tropical Fin Whale is located in the Avenida Marítima of Puerto del Rosario, specifically on the breakwater known as Paseo de Los Demócratas, and is one of the most unique elements of the urban and cultural landscape of the capital of Puerto del Rosario.
This sculpture arose from the reconstruction of the real skeleton of a fin whale (Balaenoptera edeni), approximately nine meters long, which was found dead in the waters of Fuerteventura in August 2006. The original bones of the animal were used for its creation, which gives the work a high scientific, educational and symbolic value.
The set not only functions as an outdoor sculpture integrated into the promenade, but also as an element of environmental education, which invites reflection on the richness of the marine ecosystem surrounding the island and the close historical relationship between Fuerteventura and the sea.
The Skeleton of the Bryde’s Whale is part of the project La Senda de los Cetáceos, an initiative that aims to value the marine biodiversity of the archipelago and raise awareness about the conservation of cetaceans. This project is the result of collaboration between the Cabildo of Fuerteventura, the association Canarias Conservación, the City Council of Puerto del Rosario and the Port Authority.
This initiative includes other similar sculptures located in different parts of the island, such as the Salinas del Carmen or the Saladar de Jandía, forming a cultural and environmental itinerary that connects art, science and territory.
The visit to this enclave allows you to enjoy the promenade of Puerto del Rosario from a different perspective, turning the skeleton of the fin whale into a symbol of awareness, natural memory and enhancement of the marine heritage of Fuerteventura.
