Molina de La Asomada
Living Heritage of Fuerteventura
La Molina de La Asomada, also known as the mill of ‘Los Saavedra’, is an emblematic windmill located in the village of La Asomada, in the municipality of Puerto del Rosario, Fuerteventura. This flour mill was originally built in Casillas del Ángel and moved to its present location in 1903, where it operated until 1951.
Outstanding Features
- Innovative Design: Unlike traditional mills, the molinas, or ‘female mills’, such as the one at La Asomada, have simpler machinery and a different exterior appearance. These structures allow the milling and handling of the grain in a single plant, optimizing the process.
- Restoration and Current Operation: In 2011, the Molina de La Asomada was restored by the Government of the Canary Islands and the Island Council of Fuerteventura, recovering its original splendor. Currently, it is the only mill on the island that continues to produce handmade corn gofio with the help of the wind, preserving an ancestral tradition.
Visits and Experience
Visitors to the Molina de La Asomada can immerse themselves in the history and culture of Fuerteventura, observing the traditional milling process up close and acquiring freshly made gofio. The natural environment surrounding the mill offers an ideal place to enjoy the fresh air and tranquility of the Majorero countryside.
La Molina de La Asomada not only represents a valuable architectural heritage, but it is also a living testimony of the ingenuity and adaptation of the inhabitants of Fuerteventura to their environment, keeping alive a tradition that has nurtured generations.
