Fuerteventura Island Council
The Island Council of Fuerteventura is the institution of government, administration and representation of the island, integrated into the framework of the Autonomous Community of the Canary Islands. It acts as the main body for the coordination of public policies and services at the island level, taking into account the territorial, social and economic particularities of Fuerteventura.
Like the rest of the cabildos of the archipelago, it is an autonomous public entity with its own autonomy, with competences transferred by the Statute of Autonomy of the Canary Islands and the legislation in force. Its function is to govern and administer the specific needs of the island territory, complementing the work of the municipalities and the Government of the Canary Islands.
Among the main functions of the Cabildo Insular de Fuerteventura are the provision of public services and the management of key competences for the balanced development of the island. These include areas such as land use and urban planning, environmental management, natural resources and protected areas, as well as the coordination of strategic infrastructures related to roads, water and waste, essential for the connectivity and quality of life of the population.
The Cabildo also plays a fundamental role in economic development policies, especially in strategic sectors such as tourism, agriculture, livestock and fishing, historical and current pillars of the Majorero economy. In addition, it promotes social and cultural policies, with programs in social affairs, culture, historical heritage, education, youth and sports, aimed at improving the welfare of citizens in all municipalities of the island.
It also assumes competences related to security, emergencies, transport and territorial cohesion, promoting projects that reinforce equal opportunities between the different areas of Fuerteventura.
From the organizational point of view, the Cabildo is structured in various departments and work areas, specialized in areas such as commerce, culture, agriculture, environment, education or tourism. This organization allows for a decentralized management adapted to the reality of the island.
The main headquarters of the Cabildo Insular de Fuerteventura is located in Puerto del Rosario, specifically in the Virgen del Rosario street, in the heart of the capital. It also has offices and citizen services in other parts of the island, facilitating the access of the population to the island administration.
As a whole, the Island Council of Fuerteventura is the highest island authority and the axis from which public policies are planned and promoted with a territorial vision, directly influencing the daily life of the population and the social, economic and cultural development of the island.
