Active Gofio Museum
The Active Museum of Gofio is located in the village of Tetir, within the municipality of Puerto del Rosario, and is one of the most unique ethnographic spaces of Fuerteventura. It is a living museum, where they still work in an artisanal way in what was, until 1978, an important factory of gofio, keeping intact a tradition that is an essential part of the Canary identity.
This charming museum receives every year national and foreign visitors interested in learning firsthand how the miller works, heir to a trade handed down for generations. The experience of the visit is completed with the environment in which it is located, an agricultural town of great charm, with traditional houses and balconies characteristic of the majorero interior.
The facilities conserve a good part of the original machinery, among which the old combustion toasting machine stands out, as well as various tools related to the work in the fields, the packaging room and the scales used for weighing the final product. All this allows the visitor to understand the complete process of making gofio as it was done in the past.
The Museo Activo del Gofio has been declared an Asset of Cultural Interest and houses the largest mill in the Canary archipelago, considered by some experts as the largest in the world. The complex has more than 220 years of history, which turns the visit into an authentic trip to the industrial and food past of the Canary Islands.
During the guided tours, the owner and miller explains the operation of what is considered the first gofio industry registered in the history of the Canary Islands, showing how gofio is still produced in a traditional way, using machinery designed specifically for this purpose and respecting the traditional methods used by their ancestors.
Gofio is a food obtained from the grinding of previously toasted grains, made from different cereals. Present in the Canarian diet since ancient times, it is a product of high nutritional value, rich in minerals and with a high carbohydrate content in the form of starch, which makes it an important source of energy. Its cultural and food relevance makes the Active Museum of Gofio an essential visit to understand the history, traditions and way of life of Fuerteventura.
