Las Escuevas
The Plaza de Las Escuevas -and by extension the surroundings known as Las Escuevas-is one of the spaces with more historical and social value in the center of Puerto del Rosario, and is part of the original layout of the old Puerto de Cabras, antecedent of the current capital of Puerto del Rosario. The name “Escuevas” comes from the presence, in times past, of caves and natural and artificial excavations on the waterfront and the slopes near the promenade, which served as shelter, storage or shelter for the population and fishermen in the first decades of urban life of the Castilian port.
Historically, this area was one of the first areas inhabited and used in the settlement that later became Puerto del Rosario, as can be seen in maps of the nineteenth century where the houses, structures and urban traces surrounding El Charco and Las Escuevas already appear.
Today, the Plaza de Las Escuevas is much more than a vestige of the past: it has become an urban meeting point full of life, art and culture. Located a few meters from the promenade, it acts as a link between the historic center, the sculptures of the city and the paths along the sea. The square and its surroundings are often the scene of cultural activities, citizen meetings and projects to revitalize the neighborhood of El Charco, an area with a strong local identity that has been the protagonist of community initiatives aimed at preserving its memory and social life.
In addition, its proximity to the promenade and the urban sculptural works that characterize Puerto del Rosario allows Las Escuevas to be linked to the city’s open-air art route, integrating tradition, memory and contemporaneity in the same route.
Visiting Las Escuevas implies understanding the historical origin of the urban center, appreciating the urban evolution from the old Puerto de Cabras to the current capital, and enjoying a living space that connects local history with art, leisure and daily life in Puerto del Rosario.
