However, behind those plains, ravines and ridges hides one of the oldest and most unique cultural traditions of the island: <strong>the &#8220;apa\u00f1adas&#8221;<\/strong>, an ancient livestock practice that is still alive today and has been declared <strong>an Intangible Cultural Heritage<\/strong>. <\/p>\n<h4>What are the &#8220;apa\u00f1adas&#8221;?<\/h4>\n<p>The <strong>apa\u00f1adas<\/strong> are collective gatherings in which shepherds meet to <strong>locate, group and organize the goats that live in the wild<\/strong> -known as <em>coastal cattle-<\/em>and drive them to large dry stone corrals called <strong>gambuesas<\/strong>.<br \/>\nIt is not a party or a show, but an <strong>essential activity for the care of livestock<\/strong>, passed down from generation to generation since pre-Hispanic times, long before the arrival of Europeans to the island.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/discoverpuerto.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/Gambuesa-de-Jarugo00002.jpg\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-10680\" src=\"https:\/\/discoverpuerto.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/Gambuesa-de-Jarugo00002.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"2200\" height=\"1467\" srcset=\"https:\/\/discoverpuerto.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/Gambuesa-de-Jarugo00002.jpg 2200w, https:\/\/discoverpuerto.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/Gambuesa-de-Jarugo00002-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/discoverpuerto.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/Gambuesa-de-Jarugo00002-1024x683.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/discoverpuerto.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/Gambuesa-de-Jarugo00002-768x512.jpg 768w, https:\/\/discoverpuerto.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/Gambuesa-de-Jarugo00002-1536x1024.jpg 1536w, https:\/\/discoverpuerto.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/Gambuesa-de-Jarugo00002-2048x1366.jpg 2048w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 2200px) 100vw, 2200px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<h4>Puerto del Rosario and the largest concentration of livestock on the island<\/h4>\n<p>Although Puerto del Rosario is now the administrative capital of Fuerteventura, the municipality <strong>retains the highest concentration of livestock activity throughout the island<\/strong>, especially in its vast rural territory: Tesjuate, La Ampuyenta, Tef\u00eda, Llanos de la Concepci\u00f3n, Casillas del \u00c1ngel and large areas of coast and midlands.<\/p>\n<p>The municipality is part of the <strong>Mancomunidad Ganadera de Casillas<\/strong>, one of the five in which the majorera livestock is traditionally organized. From these territories are convened and develop numerous apa\u00f1adas throughout the year, making Puerto del Rosario in <strong>a key to understanding the traditional livestock of Fuerteventura core<\/strong>. <\/p>\n<h4>How to develop an apa\u00f1ada<\/h4>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/discoverpuerto.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/Apanada3.jpeg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-10597\" src=\"https:\/\/discoverpuerto.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/Apanada3.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1702\" height=\"1231\" srcset=\"https:\/\/discoverpuerto.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/Apanada3.jpeg 1702w, https:\/\/discoverpuerto.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/Apanada3-300x217.jpeg 300w, https:\/\/discoverpuerto.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/Apanada3-1024x741.jpeg 1024w, https:\/\/discoverpuerto.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/Apanada3-768x555.jpeg 768w, https:\/\/discoverpuerto.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/Apanada3-1536x1111.jpeg 1536w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1702px) 100vw, 1702px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The apa\u00f1ada begins <strong>before dawn<\/strong>. Under the coordination of the <strong>coastal commissioner<\/strong> -the maximum traditional authority in these practices- the shepherds are distributed through ravines, ridges and mountains to close the fence.<br \/>\nWith the help of shouts, whistles, bardino dogs and the traditional <strong>&#8220;lata<\/strong> &#8221; (shepherd&#8217;s stick), the goats are guided little by little to the gambuesa. <\/p>\n<p>Once inside the pen, fundamental tasks are performed:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Separation of farrowing goats and calves<\/li>\n<li>Identification of owners<\/li>\n<li>&#8220;Godchild&#8221;, to recognize which offspring belongs to which mother.<\/li>\n<li>Traditional cattle branding<\/li>\n<li>Selection of animals for milking or removal from the shore<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>This entire process is governed by <strong>customary rules<\/strong>, which have been respected for centuries.<\/p>\n<h4>Brands, the identity of the farmer<\/h4>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/discoverpuerto.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/Apanad2.jpeg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-10589\" src=\"https:\/\/discoverpuerto.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/Apanad2.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1600\" height=\"1200\" srcset=\"https:\/\/discoverpuerto.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/Apanad2.jpeg 1600w, https:\/\/discoverpuerto.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/Apanad2-300x225.jpeg 300w, https:\/\/discoverpuerto.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/Apanad2-1024x768.jpeg 1024w, https:\/\/discoverpuerto.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/Apanad2-768x576.jpeg 768w, https:\/\/discoverpuerto.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/Apanad2-1536x1152.jpeg 1536w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1600px) 100vw, 1600px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Each farmer has <strong>his own brand<\/strong>, unique throughout the island, which is passed down within the family. These marks &#8211; formerly made with cuts on the ears or face &#8211; are <strong>officially registered in the town halls<\/strong> and are part of a traditional identification system that is, in itself, a cultural heritage. <\/p>\n<h4>An aboriginal legacy that lives on<\/h4>\n<p>The apa\u00f1adas have their roots in the culture of the ancient <strong>mahos<\/strong>, the pre-Hispanic inhabitants of Fuerteventura. In fact, the <strong>gambuesas<\/strong> are possibly <strong>the only aboriginal constructions of the Archipelago that continue to be used for the same purpose for which they were created<\/strong>. <\/p>\n<p>The associated vocabulary -baifo, gambuesa, jaira, teberite, lata-, the gestures, the routes and the knowledge of the terrain make up a <strong>collective knowledge deeply linked to the landscape<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<h4>Protected cultural heritage<\/h4>\n<p>In April 2024, at the initiative of the <strong>Cabildo of Fuerteventura<\/strong>, the apa\u00f1adas were officially recognized as an <strong>Intangible Cultural Interest<\/strong> in the category of <em>knowledge and uses related to nature, sky and sea<\/em>.<br \/>\nThis recognition protects not only the practice, but also the knowledge, community values and identity that surround it.<\/p>\n<h4>Why it is important for the visitor<\/h4>\n<p>Knowing the apa\u00f1adas allows visitors to <strong>understand the deeper Fuerteventura<\/strong>, which is not explained only with beaches and volcanoes.
