The Parish Church of Nuestra Se\u00f1ora del Rosario<\/strong>, located in the heart of Puerto del Rosario<\/strong>, is one of the most emblematic and representative monuments of the capital of Fuerteventura. Its presence has marked, since its origins, the religious, social and urban life of the city, becoming a true symbol of collective identity. <\/p>\n

History and origins<\/h3>\n

The documented origin of the temple dates back to 1812<\/strong>, when the residents of the then Puerto de Cabras<\/strong> requested a license from the bishopric to build the first oratory next to the pier<\/strong>, in response to the spiritual needs of a growing population. This initiative was driven by the English merchant James Miller<\/strong>, vice consul of Fuerteventura, a key figure in the economic development of the port. <\/p>\n

Between 1824 and 1835<\/strong>, work began on the main building, following an ambitious project in accordance with the commercial importance that the port had reached, especially linked to the barrel<\/strong> trade. However, the successive economic crises, plagues and famines that affected the island caused continuous interruptions in the work, prolonging its completion for decades. <\/p>\n

In 1888<\/strong> the bell tower<\/strong> was added, which would house two bells from Marseilles (France)<\/strong>, reinforcing the monumental character of the complex. It would not be until 1930-1931<\/strong> when the temple was finally completed with the construction of the current tower-facade<\/strong>, configuring the image we know today. <\/p>\n

Architecture and highlights<\/h3>\n

The building responds to a neoclassical style<\/strong>, with a rectangular plant of a single nave<\/strong>, gabled roof, and a presbytery elevated<\/strong> with respect to the central nave. The main facade integrates the bell tower of three bodies<\/strong>, with semicircular arches in its lower part, windows in the second body and a belfry that completes a sober and balanced set. <\/p>\n

Inside, the main altarpiece<\/strong> stands out, which houses the image of Our Lady of the Rosary<\/strong>, patron saint of the city, along with various works of sacred art that testify to the deep popular devotion. The original image of the Virgin<\/strong>, a polychrome wood carving from the 19th century<\/strong>, is currently kept in the sacristy of the temple. <\/p>\n

The parish is not only a place of worship. Throughout its history it has been the scene of major religious, social and cultural events in Puerto del Rosario. In recent years, it has even served as a support for contemporary cultural initiatives, such as the videomapping projected on its fa\u00e7ade during Christmas 2023-2024<\/strong>, reinforcing its role as a living space within the city. <\/p>\n
